The Humane Society of Elkhart County‘s Pet Food Assistance Program is designed for  families who are struggling to make ends meet. Instead of abandoning your animal, come to the shelter and the Elkhart County Humane Society will give you free food for your pet. This program is only for those who can no longer afford pet food.

Elkhart County residents can help this program by donating food to the shelter. PLEASE, pick up an extra bag of pet food, next time you are at the grocery and drop the pet food off at the Humane Society of Elkhart County. (I’m an animal lover. It hurts to even think about the expression on a formerly “loved” pet’s face when he or she gets “LEFT”. Help make it possible for more animals to STAY with their families.)

The shelter prefers Purina brand pet food and has had more requests for pet food for adult animals rather than kitten or puppy chow.

S.T.O.P. PROGRAM

Did you know that the HSEC takes in over 6,000 animals a   year…that’s 16 animals a day! Consequently, overpopulation often fills our   shelter to capacity. In response, we have instituted the S.T.O.P program   (Stop the Overpopulation of Pets), which assists residents in need of   education and support concerning the importance of spay/neuter procedures. The   HSEC works with local veterinarians for discounts on spay/neuter procedures for   our animals once they are adopted.

The Humane Society encourages spaying / neutering of all companion animals.   It will help reduce the thousands of abandoned and abused dogs and cats each   year in our community.

Click Here to download the S.T.O.P Program application. You can either mail, e-mail, fax or drop it off at our shelter. You need Adobe Reader to open.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

We work with the Center for Community Justice for Community Service support. Through its programs, Center For Community Justice holds offenders   accountable for their past actions, while giving them the opportunity to be   actively involved in making things right with their victims, their community and   themselves.  It has been shown that by giving people the opportunity to take   responsibility for their actions, and involving them in repairing the harm they   caused, fractured lives are restored.  The realization of this goal creates a safer and more just community.

EDUCATION

The HSEC offers free programs to local schools and civic organizations about   animal welfare, responsible pet ownership and much more. If you are interested   in any of the programs we offer, please contact the Humane Society to find out   more information.
