What is was like in Elkhart, Indiana

during World War II?

Video by Larry App

“When World War II ended,” says, Paul D. Thomas, Elkhart, Indiana’s “Official Historian”, “there was more elation and more excitement in Elkhart than over anything that had ever happened before. People poured into the streets. I remember that I had a 1929 Essex. If you can believe that; in 1943, I bought a 1929 Essex. When Victory in Japan Day was announced we cruised up and down Main street and we hollered and we bellowed. And it was just one of the greatest things that ever happened.”

Thomas, owned the former Paul Thomas Shoes, served on the city council and headed the Elkhart Urban Enterprise Association, along with many other civic groups and committees.

Upon retiring,Thomas opened the “Time Was” Museum located at 125-A North Main Street, Elkhart, Indiana.

On the last Super Saturday our Republican Victory Center made the 3rd most calls in the nation. But we don’t have to stop there. THIS SUPER SATURDAY–LET’S PUT ELKHART COUNTY IN THE FIRST PLACE!

If you can sign up for a shift on the phones contact Ben Parsons at (574) 612-8735 or bparson@indgop.org.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

 SHIFTS:

6 PM to 9 PM

I’ve made calls from the center and am planning on being there most of Saturday night. I promise the time goes fast, the phones are easy to use, the people you will meet at the Victory Center are all friendly and helpful. The Tea-Mac party and the KSNM (Kosciusko Silent No More) will be there. We are not only going to set new records, we’ll have a great time too. See you Saturday night!

Join us on Labor Day to walk with Richard!

It is ALMOST the end of the parade season…JUST TWO MORE PARADES!!!

1) The BIG Blueberry Parade in Plymouth for Richard – 1 hour from
Goshen. LEAVING my house (BOB MOORE’S) at 7:45.

Step out is 9:30, but be there very early, say 8:30 and
park at Martins Supermarket, 868 E Jefferson St.

There is usually a lot of confusion getting to the parade
floats… Ours (Mourdock) is #39. We will have a float
and shirts available. Looks like no rain…

2) Very short (1 mile) parade in Elkhart, starting at the Train
Depot. (20 mins from central Goshen).

Line up at 3PM, step out at 4 PM.

SEE YOU TOMORROW…

The parade lines up on Columbus and Baker…

Richard with his supporters from the Noblesville Parade. Today will be YOUR LAST CHANCE to walk with Richard Mourdock in a parade.

Hundreds of motorcycles will be rolling through the Elkhart community soon to honor the families of wounded and fallen troops. The Freedom Ride and Bike Night Rally will happen Saturday, August 11. Members of local law enforcement bike groups will ride through Elkhart, Bristol, Middlebury, Goshen, Nappanee, and Wakarusa escorting local families of soldiers killed in action.

Organizers say they aim to draw people out to line the roads in support of the families.

“What makes us do it is our patriotism,” said Jim Ballard, Corporal of the Elkhart City Police Department. “We believe in this community, we believe in what the soldiers did for this community”

“I have a lot of friends and buddies who have injures from previous wars and this one, who have served 20 years and to have my family involved in 3 different wars, it’s really kind of a key point to me,” said Jim Vance of the Elkhart Fire Department.
