The Indiana Republican candidates for U.S. Senate are getting ready to air their differences in the only statewide televised debate ahead of the May 3 primary.

Candidates Marlin Stutzman and Todd Young meet Monday evening in Indianapolis. The candidates are both sitting congressmen who have been increasingly hostile as the primary gets closer.

Young is trying to paint his tea party-backed rival as an ideologue who puts obstructionism over passing legislation. And Stutzman has characterized Young as a pawn of the establishment.

Both were first elected to Congress in 2010. The Republican winner in the primary will face former Democratic U.S. Rep. Baron Hill in the November general election.

The seat is being vacated by retiring Republican U.S. Sen. Dan Coats.

The Stutzman/Young primary debate will be livestreamed TONITE at CNN.com between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. ET. It’ll also be available through the news organization’s apps and the CNNgo web site.

Trump Is Right—Dump NATO Now

If you want to know why we have a $19 trillion national debt and a fiscal structure that will take that already staggering figure to $35 trillion and 140% of GDP within a decade, just consider the latest campaign fracas. That is, the shrieks of disbelief in response to Donald Trump’s sensible suggestion that the Europeans pay for their own defense.

The fact is, NATO has been an obsolete waste for 25 years. Yet the denizens of the Imperial City cannot even seem to grasp that the 4 million Red Army is no more; and that the Soviet Empire, which enslaved 410 million souls to its economic and military service, vanished from the pages of history in December 1991.

What is left is a pitiful remnant—–145 million aging, Vodka-besotted Russians who subsist in what is essentially a failing third world economy. Its larcenous oligarchy of Putin and friends appeared to live high on the hog and to spread a veneer of glitz around Moscow and St. Petersburg. But that was all based on the world’s one-time boom in oil, gas, nickel, aluminum, fertilizer, steel and other commodities and processed industrial materials. Stated differently, the Russian economy is a glorified oil patch and mining town with a GDP the equivalent of the NYC metropolitan area. And that’s its devastating Achilles Heel.

The Continuing Resolution (CR) that allows funding for the federal government expires what are you in foron September 30th. It must be renewed in order for the doors to stay open in Washington. The CR is the best chance we will get to withdraw funds from ObamaCare. This can be done by attaching bills by Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) or Congressman Tom Graves (R-GA) to the CR, which will totally defund ObamaCare.

But for the Cruz/Graves effort to have teeth, Republicans in both chambers of Congress must all be committed to absolutely refusing to vote for any spending bill that contains funding for ObamaCare.  Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) and Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) are leading the charge to get their colleagues to commit to this approach, by putting their signatures to a letter affirming that they will refuse to vote for a CR that contains ObamaCare funding.

Support for the Cruz/Graves bills is absolutely meaningless without ALSO SIGNING THE LEE/MEADOWS LETTER. Harry Reid and his Democrats will have no incentive to compromise unless they know the Republicans are willing to take a hard stance – even allowing the government to be shut down, if necessary – in order to stop the catastrophically unworkable and unaffordable health care law from taking effect this January.

Unless you want Obamacare, it is ESSENTIAL that you call Congress Members that are posturing a  lot, but actually doing NOTHING to PREVENT Obamacare from going into effect. TIME IS RUNNING OUT!

Don’t put off calling your elected representative because you think your voice doesn’t matter. The onslaught of calls over Syria, probably more than ANYTHING ELSE, stopped Obama from taking us into a war that could have led us into another Middle East quagmire or worse.

Click HERE to READ MORE and to see where your Congress members REALLY stand on Obamacare. (SPOILER: BOTH Jackie Walorski AND Marlin Stutzman not only signed Meadows’ letter, they co-sponsored Graves’ bill — kudos to Jackie and Marlin. As for our Senators, ahem!)

Congressman Marlin Stutzman doesn’t sound too keen on taking military action against Syria

from Marlin Stutzman’s facebook Page

“I am deeply skeptical of American military involvement in Syria. After ignoring his own ‘red line’ in recent days, President Obama again outlined no clear strategy or objective today should we take military action.

“The American people deserve to have their voices heard regarding whether the United States takes military action in this volatile region and I look forward to hearing the thoughts of Hoosiers as well as the analysis of our intelligence community, and the strategy of this Administration in the coming days.”

Update on the Situation in Syria

from Jackie Walorski’s Newsletter

“President Obama announced that he would seek a congressional vote to authorize military action in Syria. I respect this decision, because the American people deserve the opportunity to have their voices heard in Congress regarding this difficult situation.

“I urge Congress to return to Washington immediately so that President Obama can make the case to lawmakers and the American people as to how military action could fulfill a comprehensive strategy to protect our national interests and shield our allies.

“The president’s red line was already crossed, yet it still remains unclear how his recent consideration for a ‘limited, narrow act’ will deter the Assad regime, and I look forward to hearing the Administration’s specific plan.

“When the House reconvenes, I look forward to participating in a robust debate with my colleagues before any final decisions are made.”

Senator Dan Coats talks to 21 Alive in Fort Wayne

“Indiana Senator Dan Coats told Fort Wayne television station, 21 Alive that he’s working to gain more information to make sure if aid, or weapons are provided that they won’t be used against America.

“Still the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria is something that’s alarming to Senator Coats, and makes him think the U.S. should do something to stop that from happening.

“The Senator says he isn’t against intervening if it will be beneficial to Syria, but he’s concerned about starting another war in the middle east.”

Sen. Joe Donnelly Says U.S. Should Take Action in Syria

U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly visited Evansville’s AmeriQual plant and Eyewitness News got his thoughts about Syria. Donnelly tells us he believes the U.S. should take action there. But stops short of saying what.

“What we see in Syria is a very, very dangerous situation,” said Donnelly, “that we’re trying to go make sure doesn’t spread, number one, anywhere else- and, number two, that within Syria, can be controlled and can be turned into a better situation.  And the reason why is the expansion of what is going on in Syria can set the entire Middle East in flames.”

Senator Donnelly says he has faith the U.S. is using what he calls a measured, common sense approach to deciding what action should be taken. Donnelly was visiting AmeriQual as part of his “Serving Those who Serve” defense jobs tour.

MEMO: Pre-Convention Polling Update

RE: Pre-Convention Polling Update

As we head to the Republican National Convention, polls across the country show a surge of support for the Republican ticket.  The Romney-Ryan momentum is building, while the enthusiasm for Obama and Biden dwindles.

Republicans remain more enthusiastic than Democrats about this election, with 53% of Republicans in a new national USA Today / Gallup survey saying they are “more enthusiastic than usual about voting this year”, versus only 46% of Democrats.  A new CBS/NYT/Quinnipiac survey reports even higher enthusiasm gaps in the battleground states of Florida (17 point GOP enthusiasm advantage), Ohio (11 point GOP enthusiasm advantage), and Wisconsin (16 point GOP enthusiasm advantage).

Nationally, the polls have tightened up this week. An average of the past five national polls shows the race tied.  But the real news is in the battleground states, where Gov. Romney continues to close the polling gap. Perhaps the most stunning example is Wisconsin.  All the latest polls agree: Wisconsin is a tossup. It’s a dramatic shift for a state Obama won by 14 points and where he was leading by 6 points less than a month ago.  Now Chicago must be frantically redrawing their path to 270.

The RCP averages illustrate the tightening battleground races:

  • Ohio RCP average: Obama 47.2 / Romney 45.2
  • Florida RCP average: Obama 46.3 / Romney 46.3
  • Iowa RCP average: Obama 45.3 / Romney 44.3
  • Wisconsin RCP average: Obama 48.2 / Romney 46.8

The polls also capture frustration and disappointment with Obama and the economy:

  • WSJ/NBC poll: 6 in 10 believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.
  • WSJ/NBC poll: 54 percent disapprove of Obama’s handling of the economy.
  • AP-Gfk poll: Two-thirds describe economy as poor.
  • AP-Gfk poll: Nine in 10 voters say economy is “important” issue.

As Romney and Ryan fight to save Medicare, seniors are putting their trust in the GOP ticket:

  • In the latest Fox News poll, Romney has the edge among seniors 50-41 nationally.
  • In Florida, 48 percent of seniors say Romney would do a better job on Medicare according to Quinnipiac; 44 percent say Obama. In Ohio, Romney leads 49-43 with seniors on the issue.

A recap of the headlines highlighting the building GOP momentum follows:

National

Gallup – Jeffrey Jones: “Swing-State Voters Say They Are No Better Off Than in 2008”

Washington Post – JD Harrison: “Poll: Romney widens lead among small business voters”

Washington Post – Aaron Blake: “Romney’s slight swing-state surge”

Associated Press – Josh Lederman and Tom Raum: “AP-GfK poll shows White House race still tight”

TPM – Kyle Leighton: Fox Poll: Romney Up 1 Point Nationally

Fox News: Fox News poll: Voters want Uncle Sam to ‘Leave me alone’

New Hampshire

Politico – Maggie Haberman and Emily Schultheis: “New Hampshire race a jump ball”

Florida

CBS News: “Poll: Obama lead narrows in key swing states”

Wisconsin

CBS News – Brian Montopoli: “It’s official, Wisconsin: You’re a swing state”

Michigan

Real Clear Politics – Erin McPike: “Romney Camp Sees Upper Midwest Coming Into Play”

56 Percent Of Swing State Voters Say They Aren’t Better Off Than They Were Four Years Ago, Compared To 40 Percent Who Say They Are Better Off. (Jeffrey M. Jones, “Swing-State Voters Say They Are No Better Off Than In 2008,” Gallup, 8/20/12)

Romney Is “Winning The Favor Of Small Business Owners… And It’s Not Even Close.” “Main Street has already proved an important battleground in the presidential election. So which candidate is winning the favor of small business owners? Mitt Romney, and it’s not even close, according to a new poll.”(J.D. Harrison, “Poll: Romney Widens Lead Among Small Business Voters,” The Washington Post, 8/21/12)

  • “The President’s Numbers Have Fallen Six Points Since May, While Mitt Romney Has Picked Up Four Points With Business Owners.” (J.D. Harrison, “Poll: Romney Widens Lead Among Small Business Voters,” The Washington Post, 8/21/12)

Nine In 10 Voters Say The Economy Is “Important” For Them, While Half Say It Is “Extremely Important. “The frail economy, with the unemployment rate hovering at 8.3 percent more than three years after the deep recession officially ended, remains the No. 1 issue. Nine in 10 call it important for them and half of voters say it is ‘extremely important,’ outpacing all other issues tested by at least 10 percentage points.” (Josh Lederman and Tom Raum, “AP-GfK Poll Shows White House Race Still Tight,” The Associated Press, 8/21/12)

“Two-Thirds In The Poll Described The Economy As Poor.” (Josh Lederman and Tom Raum, “AP-GfK Poll Shows White House Race Still Tight,” The Associated Press, 8/21/12)

41 Percent Of Independents Support Romney Compared To 30 Percent Who Back Obama. “Among true independents, those who say they do not lean toward either party, the share of undecided voters is declining, with each candidate picking up new support at about the same pace. However, Romney maintains a small advantage with the group, with the backing of 41 percent of independents to Obama’s 30 percent. Some 21 percent still say they support neither candidate.” (Josh Lederman and Tom Raum, “AP-GfK Poll Shows White House Race Still Tight,” The Associated Press, 8/21/12)

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll:  “Not Surprisingly, Romney Holds A Six-Point Advantage Over Obama (44 Percent To 38 Percent) On Which Candidate Has Better Ideas On How To Improve The Economy.” (Mark Murray, “NBC/WSJ Poll: Heading Into Conventions, Obama Has Four-Point Lead,” NBC News, 8/21/12)

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll: 54 Percent Of Voters Disapprove Of Obama’s Handling Of The Economy, While 44 Percent Approve. (NBC/The Wall Street Journal Poll, 1000 RV, MoE 3.1%, 8/16-20/12)

45 Percent Of Voters Say That Romney Has Better “Executive And Managerial Skills” Compared To 32 Percent Who Say Obama Does. (NBC/The Wall Street Journal Poll, 1000 RV, MoE 3.1%, 8/16-20/12)

37 Percent Of Voters Say Romney Would Be Better At “Changing Business As Usual In Washington” Compared To 31 Percent Who Say Obama Would Be Better. (NBC/The Wall Street Journal Poll, 1000 RV, MoE 3.1%, 8/16-20/12)

Volunteer today at the Republican Victory Center in Elkhart!

Rebecca Kubacki, Richard Mourdock, Mike Pence, Jackie Walorski, Tim Neese, Tim Wesco

The Elkhart Republican Victory Center made the THIRD most phone calls last week of any political phone bank the nation. Only two political phone banks, both located in Chicago, made more calls. Many of those calls turned out to be incomplete calls registered to dead people.

The Elkhart Republican Victory Center volunteers are hard workers. Look at all the calls they made.

Joan Brice

Congratulations to top caller, extraordinaire, Joan Bice who has made 4,207 calls so far. Joan is a worker. She wasn’t FINISHED calling when I left

Please consider devoting at least an hour or so a week to being part of this WINNING TEAM. The Victory Center is air conditioned. There are snacks and drinks. There is pizza for dinner. And best of all–the people you will meet are fun and like-minded.

The phones are simple to use. And it is fun.
